REINHA.com – We often find or even experience nose bleeding. This condition often results in panic, but do not worry too much because the nose bleeding is not a dangerous disease and usually does not cause death.

Nose bleeding is acute bleeding originating from the nostrils, nasal cavity or nasopharynx. There is a blood coming out of the nose that stops within 2 minutes, or more than 10 minutes.

The risk factors that can cause nose bleeding are:

  1. Trauma
  2. Infection / allergies such as: rhinitis, sinusitis
  3. Cardiovascular disease, hypertension and vascular disorders, such as atherosclerosis, chronic nephritis
  4. History of drug use such as NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin, heparin, tiklodipin
  5. Long-term use of steroid nasal spray
  6. Tumors, both benign and malignant that occur in the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx
  7. Congenital abnormalities. Congenital abnormalities that often cause nose bleeding are hereditary telangiectatic bleeding (hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia / Osler’s disease)
  8. There is a septal deviation
  9. The influence of the environment, for example living in a very high area, low air pressure or a very dry air environment

There are still many people who mistakenly perceive nose bleeding at home. Ways to treat nose bleeding that we can do at home are:

  1. Sit the child on your lap and then lower his/her head. Do not lift it because blood can enter the respiratory tract
  2. Press the top of the child’s nose (slightly above the nostrils), try not to cover the child’s nostrils, because children still cannot breathe through the mouth. For adults, you can squeeze the nose and breathe through the mouth
  3. Do this for about 5-10 minutes
  4. After 10 minutes release the pressure, and check the nose
  5. If there is still blood, give an ice pack at the base of the nose
  6. Examine the nose again, if bleeding has stopped cleaning the remaining blood
  7. However, if the bleeding has not stopped after doing all the above treatments, then immediately go to the nearest health center to get help

To avoid the occurrence of nose bleeding again, things can be done are :

  1. Always be careful when picking your nose
  2. Reduce smoking, because cigarettes can increase the risk of nasal irritation
  3. Don’t get too hard when you runny nose
  4. Consult your doctor if you are using a blood thinning drug with a history of having experienced nose bleeding
